Janet Ayliffe: In Touch with Nature

Janet Ayliffe has been a printmaker and painter for more than forty years. Born on Kangaroo Island, she spent most of her first eighteen years there, and to this day returns regularly for fresh inspiration. As soon as she could walk, Janet set out to explore the scrublands and waterways of her family farm.

At home, Janet made drawings of the wondrous places she had seen with charcoal on walls – all creatures who flew, walked, swam or slithered. Her etchings often involve the use of multiple plates carrying different colours, as well as incorporating chine collé, archival digital and hand painted elements. Her imagery is drawn from her inner world, her family, the surrounding landscape of the Adelaide Hills and her childhood home on the Island. She looks into the natural world with wonder and reverence, as she does with her inner life, combining and layering them in a unique visual expression.

Our special interactive feature collection of Janet's works includes just a handful of her striking creations. To see more available works from Janet click here!
