Artist Statement:
Exploring the ways people value and interact with the environment, the theme of this painting is fire and regeneration. The figure sits on a smokey, blue/grey forest background. The painting is layered through the use of silhouetted gum tree trunks that have a charcoal smudging effect as they reach the edges of the painting, as a means to describe a past fire event. The forest background is told in the negative spaces between the silhouettes. One single untouched tree in the background overlaps the silhouettes in an attempt the reinforce a layered style. This tree is also indicative of the regenerating forest.
The figure is both gum tree and human and signifies regrowth. New, bright green shoots emerge from between her fingers in an act of defiance.
