Artist Statement:
The subject of this painting explores the ways people value and interact with the environment. The theme is one of water. Using muted tones to create an almost water colour style, the figure sits in front of a misty forest background. She is both gum tree and human at the same time. The figure is meant to be an interloper of sorts. While the figure is not from the forest, she is entwined with it.
The tree in the foreground to the left of the figure subtly mimics the pose of the figure in an attempt to reinforce the illusion that she has originated from the forest. The background of the painting incorporates differing artwork styles. In the centre, the style is one of realism, while the trees towards the edges of the painting become more abstract. This brings focus to the main subject.
