"Isn’t blue and white china calming and friendly. It seems to compliment anything it is placed next to. This beautiful bowl dates from the Kangxi period 1662 - 1722. With its gently rounded sides, it has been painted with The Three Friends of Winter - pine trees, bamboo and prunus blossom. The Chinese celebrate the pine, bamboo and plum together, for they observed that these plants do not wither as the cold days deepen into the winter season unlike many other plants.

A curious young Magpie has flown down onto the bowl to see if there is anything of interest. Magpies are our friends in the garden. We love to hear their songs, watch them play and trail behind us at a distance where we are gardening. They are fiercely protective, and we observe them flying to impossible heights in the sky, trying to chase Wedge Tail Eagles from their territory. I love to look out my kitchen window to see them perched on the bean pyramids in our garden - rulers of all they survey."
