Vicki Stavrou

Vicki Stavrou Biography

Byron Bay-based artist Vicki Stavrou works primarily in acrylic on canvas and occasionally on wood panels. She uses Golden Acrylics for their intense colors, particularly the fluorescent range, which gives some of her paintings a pop art edge. Her main influences include David Hockney and Howard Arkley.

Vicki's passion for painting mid-century modernism narratives is driven by her love of swimming pools and exploration. She reflects the post-WWII optimism and economic boom, which highlighted the playful and futuristic aspects of mid-century modern design. Motels with large neon signs, iconic symbols of the American Dream, feature prominently in her work.

Mid-century modernism, known for its fun-loving yet functional style and spacious, integrative architectural designs, is central to Vicki's narrative paintings. Many of her works are set in Palm Springs, California, a hub for mid-century modernism.

Her paintings evoke a sense of fun and innocence, focusing on the lifestyle and architecture of the 1950s, with swimming pool scenes, butterfly houses, and iconic motels capturing the simplicity of that era. Retro scenes of Barbie and Ken are also featured in some of her smaller works.
