Yvonne George Biography

Born in 1959 in the North Island of New Zealand, I spent my childhood living on a 6000 acre sheep and cattle station. This is where my love of animals began. I then moved to Raglan, a small town on the west coast. Both of these environments allowed me to become an avid collector and observer of natural forms; from drying seedpods found in creek beds to the eroded, polished, and or skeletal forms washed up along the rugged west coast.

In 1980, I travelled to Australia on a working holiday and found myself in Bendigo doing a Bachelor of Arts in Ceramics. It was during my third year, while producing figurative forms, that I developed a passion for sculpture.

My work methods and materials have developed and expanded from ceramics to using metals such as steel, copper, bronze and aluminium, along with cements and resin.

Strengthened by 30 years experience as a full time professional sculptor, I have gained the necessary skills in developing contemporary, site-specific works and meeting commission-brief expectations. Along the way, I have partnered with a broad range of business professionals, including structural engineers, foundries, and heavy steel fabricators to assist me in completing larger works that are beyond the physical capabilities of my work shop. The outcomes of community consultations, site visits, and extensive research always inform my designs. And as always, my passion for the natural fauna and flora are still integral to, and synonymous with my methodology.
