Melbourne based visual artist Belinda Wilson, recently completed a Master of Fine Art by Research at RMIT University (2014-2018) wherein she deliberates the widespread effects that weather has on inhabitants in regional areas within Australia. In recent times, the issues surrounding extreme weather conditions have come into stronger focus, as many regional communities are being battered by the devastating impacts of challenging and often extreme weather conditions.
Belinda’s art practice of painting, drawing and digital imagery spans almost thirty years, with exhibitions throughout Australia in both regional and commercial galleries including Artistry and Victoria Galleries, Wangaratta Regional Gallery and the Toowoomba Regional Gallery in Queensland. On an international scale, Belinda has exhibited at the Australian Embassy in Korea, in Costa Rica and New York City. She has been a finalist for a number of national awards including National Works on Paper at the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery, Prometheus Visual Art Award, Toyota Community Spirit Gallery and the ANL Maritime Art Prize.
Plotted landscapes of cobalt and Prussian blues, crimson and violet rest beneath intertwined scenery where we find ghostly figures considered and contemplating in a state of immobilized stillness. These are emotional moments yet not to be taken at face value. Belinda portrays the landscape as both harsh and mellow, an area barren and fertile. The artistic approach is expressed through painterly layers of color and texture accompanied by precise linework.
