Katherine Boland discusses her latest body of work
'Where There's Still Life'
August 13, 2023

As a climate artist, I am committed to using my art as a tool to raise awareness about the urgent need for action on climate change. This latest body of work consists of digital collages created with photographs of my burnt timber paintings and artificial intelligence.

These artworks are a reflection of the complex and interconnected relationships between humans, nature, and technology. By incorporating elements of both the natural world and the digital realm, it explore the ways in which these two worlds intersect and influence each other, highlighting the need for balance and harmony between them and raising important questions about the role that humans play in shaping the environment.

Using artificial intelligence as a tool in my creative process allows me to push the boundaries of traditional collage-making techniques and experiment with new forms of expression. The AI algorithms I use are trained on images of nature which, when blended with my burnt timber painting photographs, generate unique and unexpected combinations of visual elements.

This work is a meditation on the fragility of our environment and the devastating impact of climate change on our planet. Through these digital collages, I hope to encourage viewers to think more deeply about our relationship with the natural world and the impact that human activity is having on the environment.

Ultimately, this work is a call to action for all of us to take responsibility for the planet we inhabit and to work towards a more sustainable and equitable future.
