Gardens for Dreaming
"A garden is a place for intimacy with nature, where we gather together our favourite flowers and plants to create a living painting. They are spaces to sit quietly with a book, share a meal with friends or provide a safe sanctuary for children, family, friends and our companion animals. As an artist I am often inspired by the world of gardens, as they offer a ceaseless range of colours and beauty.
I spent some time in the Northern Territory last year, staying near a large billabong (Wulner country) which was filled with tall stem water lilies and their floating pads. It was a total dreamscape and inspired two large moody paintings of the lilies. There is a painting of a white wicker reading chair in a coastal garden, another of a golden window that illuminates an evening garden, as well as some paintings of my favourite cats playing and hiding in imaginary gardens.
There are two small etchings inspired by my book Charles and Barbara Blackman, A Decade of Art and Love, published by Thames & Hudson. These images are a dedication to love and are set in the Eden of my imagination. Time instills memories into our own sentimental landscapes and this is the theme of my Garden paintings."
