Three-time finalist in the Doug Moran National Portrait prize, celebrated artist Andrew Baines has joined forces with renowned sculptor Stephen Marr in creating an exhibition exploring true escapism and identity.
“Art is my escapism. I am the figure in the sometimes over-populated landscape or the baron beachscape, contemplating my existence. My paintings are a metaphor of my life, battling with the urban herds, pursuing horizons while seeking autonomy & freedom.”
- Andrew Baines
Stephen Marr wears many hats as an artist; he is a painter, a sculptor and a draftsman. By fusing all of these creative methods, Stephen advances into a story teller, seeking to express a narrative, character, or metaphor with each sculpture.
“The process comes with struggles, failures, serendipity, frustration and the full gamut of contentment in the quiet joy of craftsmanship. There is a sensuous hedonism in paint textures and smells, in carving perfumed wood, in the application of glazes. As time has progressed my work has become more concerned with the human condition and the connection of this expression with the viewer. I offer up an idea/concept/ metaphor or placebo for them to engage with.”
- Stephen Marr.
