We are excited to present a brand new collection of artworks from Ralf Kempken and Darren Doye at our Malvern Gallery this July!

While Ralf and Darren's works are aesthetically different, both artists are influenced by the urban landscape, and the impact of urban identity and how it effects the way we live as a society.

Both artists use layering techniques which adds an interactive element to their artworks - this is particularly topical given the past year we have spent separated and social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

About his new body of work, Darren says “These tactile works are inspired from ordinary moments that become extraordinary and playfully presented with unique surreal stylings. The interactive element of the moving panels encourages the viewer to touch and move different sections of the paintings to enhance their meaning.”

Ralf’s paintings frame inner city Melbourne in a slightly different light. Light creates shadow, and this interaction becomes visible in the physical structure of the stencil and resulting paintings. “I like to portray a sense of initial unfamiliarity with the streets of Melbourne that we know well; to create a feeling of calm or drama depending on what you bring/project onto the painting, just like an inkblot test. I would like to encourage an altered outlook on an environment that we take for granted. To be a tourist in your own hometown.”
