In celebration of our one year anniversary of opening our Gallery in Flinders, we are showcasing the most stunning display of Stephen Glassborow sculpture for the Melbourne Cup long weekend.
Stephen will be in attendance Saturday November 3rd, between 12 -4 pm.
Stephen Glassborow has exceptional technique in his skillfully detailed bronze works. For Glassborow, bronze is the ultimate material with its historic past seeped into ancient civilisations across the globe. The longevity of the material surpasses any other media, the reality being these artworks could still be here for a thousand years. Glassborow has never felt comfortable with being labelled a classical sculptor, he says: “When I first started exhibiting, they would tell me I was a classical sculptor. It irked me, and so I found myself trying to put a quirk or a twist into the figure. I looked for ways to make the figure have a contemporary relationship.” One can recognize the influence of Art Deco and Greco Roman figurative sculpture in the work, however Glassborow retains a very contemporary perspective often dissecting the work, creating segments that define the sculptural qualities of the artwork but also serving to abstract the image. These works are beautifully crafted contemporary works created in one of the most ancient mediums.
