Barbara Chalk works from her home studio in the Adelaide Hills. Barbara’s goal is to take viewers on a whimsical journey that blends serious contemplation with playful satire.

A recurring subject in her art is the hare, which she uses to explore deeper issues that resonate with her. The hare’s strikingly elongated legs and ears capture the imagination through its expressions of fear, curiosity, and defiance.

Rich in folklore and fantasy, the hare has symbolised intelligence, physical prowess, and quick wit for centuries. In Barbara's work, the hare becomes a symbolic guide for examining contemporary social issues, particularly bullying, which can escalate into control and domestic violence. Through her art, Barbara aims to reveal the tactics used by abusers to manipulate others.

Her current work also features lighter and more humorous subjects, often incorporating clever puns to engage the viewer. Inspired by Albrecht Dürer’s iconic Young Hare (1502), Barbara’s preferred medium of pen and ink pays homage to her early love of etchings and engravings found in Aesop’s fables.
