Lately I've been using silence more and more as a base point for paintings. So much in art demands our attention through action and meaning and colour and brilliance and breadth and panache that it's a relief to find subjects that understate reality - it's why I prefer to search for them in wilderness. With a subject like this billabong at night, silent soft darkness can be a baseline for imagined sounds of frogs insects and birds of the night. But the only action is the gentle motion of twisted ghostly gums and the slightly shimmering reflections of stars."
