I worked on 'Last Light and Lemon Tree' and ‘Last Light’ at the same time, both based on that magical time at the end of the day. The canvas is a poly-cotton with a very fine tooth that allows me to scumble the brushwork and I often wipe it back into the paint. Then, after a while, usually after leaving for a few days, parts of the painting start to ‘talk’ and I then push and pull the paint to create some depth. Often, a highlight or drawing back in with Conte or oil pastel gives some interest and draws the eye.
