My paintings are always based on landscapes I have seen. And I usually work from a combination of colour gouaches, painted in the field and sketches. When gouache is used as inspiration - it jogs my memory for colours and shapes. I often sketch out the composition to get me going, and then the painting takes over.
The colour palette is my main inspiration. And when I work close to the canvas, I see and am interested in just the shapes. It’s not until I stand back and see the painting as a whole that the landscape emerges.
