Deirdre Botha is a ceramic artist living and working in Pretoria, South Africa.
"I create art that has a fun, whimsical attitude. I do not try to make social commentary work but rather pieces that appeals to people’s sense of playfulness. This is achieved by the combination of craft and fine art principles. Through social commentary I have found that my audience is very receptive of art that is not serious but there to please the eye and mind.
The construction of my latest whales brought me full circle back to my first love…ceramics! This versatile medium suits me perfectly. Combined with my love of oil painting I feel I have found an extraordinary way of creating and assembling one of a kind ceramic works. The leniency of clay gives me the opportunity to create without restrictions. These whales are so very unique, each one is stamped with a series number and I sell them as collectors’ items.
I cannot say that I was influenced by someone or something in particular. It has always been my passion to be original and true to myself in whatever I do. I create what I love with the hope that it will also speak to the viewer. I aim to please in a colourful, whimsical manner."
