Mal Chambers Biography

Mal Chambers is an artist with a passion for creating striking, soulful compositions depicting Australian wildlife. Following studying grapic design and illustration at Newcastle College of Art in the UK, he enjoyed a career as an art director in advertising in both London and Australia.

Mal fell in love with the Australian wildlife after arriving here from the UK, and is a strong supporter of habitat conservation, which has ultimately served as an inspiration for his works and has helped to start a conversation and raise awareness for this important issue.

Encountering the subjects in real life is an important part of his process, which has seen Mal travel throughout Australia to wild areas, sanctuaries, parks and zoos to get as close as possible to the real thing.

Primarily a figurative artist, Mal employs his own personal take on classical techniques to capture character, emotion, and a moment. His works have been shown in galleries across Australia, with his portrait of disability rights activist Carly Findlay drawing paticular acclaim, acheiving finalist status at the Black Swan Prize (now the Lester Prize). The portrait hung alongside work by some of Australia's current great portrait painters in the Art Gallery WA, Perth.
