Ellie Malin is a print media artist based in Melbourne. Her colourful bold art works reflect a playful approach to image making where bright colours and form construct the landscape. She draws on her childhood experiences living abroad, which has had a profound effect in moulding her cultural identity.
Her artworks and patterns are inspired by a love for travel, childhood memories, and also from the most meaningful to the insignificant moments in life, in all their beauty. From an early age she fostered a strong appreciation for art and design. Influenced by photography, architecture and popular culture, Ellie began to create her own works where she experiments with colour, texture and form.
Travelling between continents enthused her appreciation for art and design being acutely aware of the differences between cities with their distinct cultural diversities, architecture (new versus the old) and natural geographic surroundings. These themes have continued to influence Ellie’s art practice, where images are constructed through an exploration of shape, colour and form. Her preferred medium is relief printing with lino or wood block, however she is not limited to this and practices other forms of image making such as photography, drawing and collage.
“An image’s origins may begin as something quite recognisable as I slowly take on a process of deconstructing it into pure simplified shapes and colour. In effect I’m pulling things apart in order to simplify their appearance”.
