Do you have a passion for art history and love learning about different art movements and the stories about artists? Do you want greater knowledge about discussing art terms and defining art practices? Come along to Manyung Gallery’s Art Conversation course with Artist and Senior Educator Belinda Wilson for a 5-week course offering the fundamentals of understanding and appreciating different art practices.
COURSE OVERVIEW This 5-week introductory course provides an in-depth look at Western art history, concentrating on significant movements and artists that have influenced contemporary art practices. Each week you will be introduced to broad artistic styles, specific art movements, pivotal artworks and artists that have shaped the world. The lecturer will examine how each artwork has been created including looking at the artist’s techniques, medium, style, approach, and themes. Relevant sculptures, painting, printmaking, photography, public art, and drawings will connect you with historical settings that will be discussed in detail.
Week 1 Making an Impression: Investigating Impressionist (1865 – 1885) and Post-Impressionist artists (1885-1910) and their declaration of an 'aesthetic war'
Week 2 Delving into the avant-garde: How Fauvism (1900-1935), Expressionism (1905-1920) and Cubism (1907-1914) shocked the establishment and influenced future artists.
Week 3 Defying Reason: A look into the imaginative world of Dadaism (1916 – 1922) and Surrealism (1917 – 1950).
Week 4 Celebrating the Unconventional: How Abstract Expressionism (1940 – 1950s) broke away from the conventions and spontaneously created something magical.
Week 5 Challenging Consumerism: The explosive effects of Op Art and Pop Art (1950s – 1960s) will explore how artists created artworks from popular and mass culture.
SUITED TO This introductory course is suited to participants who are: • wishing to learn and discuss art history • wanting to be in a creative environment and gallery setting • aiming to meet like-minded art enthusiasts • wanting to strengthen an understanding to support buying and investing in art. No prior knowledge or experience is necessary for this introductory course. OUTCOME The overall outcome of this introductory 5-week course is to provide learners with: • skills in understanding artists and art movements that have shaped historical events. • a knowledge of art history, the artists and their techniques, styles, themes, and mediums • a supportive, artistic, and fun environment to discuss art. • on completion of the course, you will be awarded a Certificate in Art Appreciation.
