Helen Di Tomasso Description

Artist Satement: " I am an artist living and working in Mornington, Victoria. I completed my Visual Arts Diploma in 2009 at Chisholm Institute of TAFE. Soon after completing my studies, I was awarded numerous prizes in various competitions and was a finalist in the Emerging Artist Competition held by the Walker St Gallery.

I am presently represented by the Manyung Gallery Group.

My interest is in nature be it plant form, pattern or colour. I love paint, and apply it with brush, scraper and fingers. I enjoy playing with bold and soft tones using different mediums, and I like to discover beauty in random combinations of colour, therefore my application is quick and intuitive allowing my spirit to guide my selections. Breath is important in this process. I use layering techniques with paint and drawings to provide depth to my works and my personal expression is explored within a semi abstract framework."

In Helen’s work, she explores line and motif. These form the skeleton from which strong figures speak from the canvas. She explores other cultures, and weaves a connection between the concrete and natural environments into many of her paintings.

Colour has its own voice, used with playful variation and emotion—within the creative process, Helen juxtaposes bold and soft tones. Helen is also intrigued by the relationships among form, the conveyance of meaning, and process. Her personal expression is explored within a semi abstract framework, where identity and memory come together.
