Born in 1951 in Berkeley California, David was raised and educated on the California coastline.
From a young age David began his “love affair” with the ocean, becoming a surfer at age 13 and being dazzled by the beauty of the sea. As a teenager and young man, his artistic talents emerged as he experimented with airbrushes and surrealist images.
In 1974 he emigrated to New Zealand where he built a beachside home and started a family. Being surrounded by an inspiring environment moved David to continue his artistic passion. With many exhibitions in New Zealand including a big show at the Auckland Society of Arts back in 1987, and his participation in the original “Artex(s)” back in the 1990’s, David’s work has always been well known in New Zealand. After a long stint working in the Art Department with the Film Industry in Auckland on feature films and TV, David made the move, with his supportive partner Jo, to Australia and the Gold Coast in 2005 to further his career as an artist.
In 2006 David was selected to work on the new Lux Palace, in Donetsk in the eastern Ukraine. He worked with a team of artists for 5 months painting the ceilings in traditional and classical realist themes.
Having sold many works and commissions in the last few years, plus a solo show at the Sofitel Hotel in Broadbeach Queensland, in 2008, David was honoured with winning the First Prize at the 2010 d’Arcy Doyle Art Award in Queensland, and last year he also convincingly won “The People’s Choice Award” at the 2011 Swell Sculpture Festival for his 3D art sculpture “The Ocean Cubed” which has also been exhibited at the Gold Coast Airport.
His paintings hang in collections throughout Australia and New Zealand as well as in Britain, Holland, Japan, Hong Kong, and the US.
David has been working with aluminium as a surface for his oil paintings for over 12 years. In that time he has developed and perfected the procedure to create a unique and sought after style of Art.
These paintings reflect my love and appreciation of our exquisite planet. All of my work is created on solid, pure aluminium, which is hand polished, thoroughly cleaned, sanded/ground, and then layers of the highest quality Mussini translucent resin oil paints are applied to achieve the desired result. The finished painting has a very durable 2-pac polyurethane finish on it that is easily cleaned with a soft cloth, or paper towel, and a bit of window cleaner if desired. Good lighting, from above, greatly enhances the 3-dimensional aspect of this artwork!
