Public Collections and Commissions:
“I combine strong forms together with complex surface textures and rich colours to create unique sculptural vessels. I work with recycled, non-precious and precious metals; working each piece with forming, chasing and gilding techniques.
“My work is inspired by the rich textures, colours and sculpted shapes of natural forms and landscapes: fragments of sea-worn shells, the rock formations of a battered coastline, a curl of split bark, the dancing light and shadow of woodland. I also draw inspiration directly from the varied natural qualities and characteristics of metal.
“I am very fortunate to live and work surrounded by my subject matter. I spend a good deal of time walking, looking at the landscape and the details within it, the changes through the year. There is an unending source of inspiration. I have no interest in copying nature, but aim to capture a sense of it, my response to it. I draw, photograph and collect and often reduce all this information down to abstract elements which then lead to a new work.
“I am fascinated by vessel forms, both organic and manmade. Vessels are one of the most basic and universal of objects, in daily mundane use and playing vital roles at occasions of celebration and honour. My current steel pieces explore the idea of transformation and perceived value, each piece is worked from a reclaimed steel can which is ‘transformed’ into a ‘precious’ vessel.
“I take an experimental approach to working with metal. It is vital to me that the metal is also allowed to suggest a direction, to let the natural qualities of the medium join with my ideas. My work is a fusion of artistic intent and the natural characteristics of the materials. I feel the link that the metal has with the landscape very strongly; the process of growth and decay that has happened to create it. Through my work I try to make this link clear and to celebrate it.”
